If you've recently moved or are planning to relocate, it's essential to update your address with Medicare to ensure that you receive important information about your coverage. In this article, we'll explain why it's important to update your address, how to do it, and what to expect after making the change of address for Medicare.

Why It’s Important to Update Your Address with Medicare

Keeping your address up to date with Medicare is vital for receiving important documents, such as coverage updates, prescription drug plan details, and premium notices. If you’re enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan, not receiving these communications could mean missing out on plan changes or deadlines.

Additionally, if you move out of your current plan’s service area, you may be eligible for a Special Enrollment Period(SEP). This allows you to change your Medicare plan without facing penalties, provided you update your address in time. For more details on how this works, you can read about the Special Enrollment Period.

How to Update Your Address with Medicare

Updating your address with Medicare is easy, and there are a few ways to do it:

  • By Phone: Call 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227) to report your address change.

  • By Mail: Complete Medicare change of address Form CMS-10280 and mail it to the address listed on the form.

If you are relocating to another state, you may also need to transfer your Medicare coverage to your new location. You can read about how to transfer Medicare to another state for further instructions.

Updating Your Address with the Social Security Administration (SSA)

If you receive Social Security or Supplemental Security Income (SSI), updating your address with the SSA is equally important. Since Medicare is linked to Social Security, failing to notify SSA about your move could cause delays in receiving your benefits or Medicare-related information.

You can update your address with the SSA online via your my Social Security account, by phone, or by visiting your local SSA office.

What to Expect After Updating Your Address

Once you’ve submitted your address change to Medicare, it may take a few weeks for the update to be processed. You should receive confirmation from Medicare that your address has been successfully updated. Be sure to check that all documents, including your Medicare card, are being sent to your new address.

If you’ve also updated your address with the SSA, verify that your Social Security benefits and Medicare information are aligned with your new details.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

When updating your address with Medicare and the SSA, it’s essential to avoid these common mistakes:

  • Not updating both Medicare and SSA: Failure to update both could result in receiving important documents at the wrong address, or worse, not receiving critical information about your coverage.

  • Forgetting to check your service area: If you move out of your Medicare Advantage plan’s service area, remember that it could trigger a Special Enrollment Period, allowing you to change your plan.

  • Delaying the change: Updating your address as soon as possible is crucial, especially if you’re eligible for a Special Enrollment Period.
